Before Wellington Golf Club moved locations from ‘Namima” to the ‘Caves Course” in 1942, the immediate area was a racecourse and the tree in background still stands. Check it out when out at the club for the Centenary on March 15. This race on May 16, 1928 was won by Mr B. Veech Senr’s brown gelding ‘Rubelin’.
The Late Betty McKeown was unbeatable when in form and a stick in her hands.
WELL, it won’t be on the actual date - records talk of 1924, but according to an official document held at the current clubhouse, the Wellington Golf Club was formed in 1925 on “Nanima”, the Barton family property, with an 18-hole sand-green course near the Macquarie Bridge between Nanima and the Macquarie River - but there’s going to be a centenary celebration out at the present ‘Caves’ sight on Sunday, March 15.
It’s always great to have an excuse to hold a party, so Wellington Soldiers Memorial Golf Club is inviting all to participate in the day.
It won’t be all golf. The party has been arranged so that every member of your family will be entertained.
An all-day barbecue will bee the hunger fangs at bay and there’ll be plenty of fun things for the youngsters.
Junior putting, just one of the golfing games for the kids.
Plenty of seating, inside and outdoors will be available for relaxing in or out of the sun.
For those who are keen of golf, or those who just play once in a while, the club has organised a ‘Four-Person Ambrose’ competition to make it easier on the lesser experienced players.
Make sure you form a team of one or two good players in the mix.
There’ll be plenty of prizes to share around as well.
Team entries are now be called and will close closer to the day.
Importantly, being a centenary celebration, people are being asked to make contact with past Wellingtonians, even if they were not club members, and encourage them to head to Wellington for the weekend.
