RESIDENTS WITHIN the communities of Mumbil, Stuart Town and Euchareena (Stumbileena) have finally let all know that they want Australia Day celebrated on the ‘day’ January 26.

After the Dubbo-based regional council resolved to hold the ‘day’ on Australia Day eve, the districts put up with it until this year.

When council decided to stick with the eve ceremony in Wellington, then changed the date for Dubbo, Stumbileena – (Stuart Town, Mumbil, Euchareena) walked away from the council’s plans and decided to hold their own – on the actual day.

And after Wellington’s scorching hot ceremony on the ‘eve’, Wellington locals are up in arms because council has taken over the ceremony with little or minimal involvement of Wellington district communities.

With Australia Day Council’s full support, the Stuart Town Advancement Association conducted the Stumbileena awards on the actual Australia Day at Moxon Park from 8am with the awards ceremony staring at 8.45am.

The Stumbileena Village citizens of the Year were Sheree and Jamie Howard, who returned to the town several years ago and restored and reopened the Stuart Town Store, much to the delight of the district, and in the past 12 months bought the local hotel, and now Stuart Town is humming, thanks to the community mindedness of Jamie and Sheree.

Euchareena Citizen of the year was Peter Wykes, well respected voice for the area and strong long-time rural fire service veteran area Captain.

Mumbil Citizen was Hazel Keogh, certainly the major stalwart of the town.

Young Citizen of the year was Gracie Pulbrook.
