Jockeys vie for $3500 prizemoney
WHILE jockeys gain prominence after a race if they rode a winner, little more is heard by the public of their performances.
For the past two years jockeys have been put in the spotlight during the Wellington Boot Racing Carnival (this year Friday 10 and Sunday April 12) through a Jockey Challenge worth $3500 in prizemoney – and this year it continues.
For several decades Wellington’s Nigel Tolhurst had been the Clerk of the Scales at most Central and Western NSW race meetings and was looked upon by jockeys an officials as a really “top bloke”.
It’s now three years since Nigel’s passing and his wife, Sharon of Ess Tee Accounting, knowing how much Nigel was respected by the industry, inaugurated the Nigel Tolhurst “Clerk of the Scales” Memorial Jockey Challenge.
Points are awarded for first three placings in each race over the two-day Wellington Boot carnival, with double points for the Boot race.
The jockey leading after the last race on Boot day gains $2000, second, $1000 and third $500.
Last year Clayton Gallagher was the winner, with Braith Nock second and Tilly McCarroll third from the 17 races.
