After 37 years of dedicated service to the NSW Fire Brigade - now Fire & Rescue, John Hunt hangs up his service helmet for the last time in the Wellington fire station.
John was an enthusiastic team competitor in the “Wellington Boots” championships on many occasions throughout the state.
He was appointed Deputy Captain of the station in 2017 and has been a mainstay of the local ‘On Call’ firefighters throughout all of those years.
LAST FRIDAY was John Hunt’s last day as a firefighter.
Friday, October 24 marked the retirement of the Deputy Captain from Fire & Rescue NSW, 493 Station Wellington after serving 37 years as a Retained (On Call) Firefighter.
John was appointed on October 1, 1988 and was appointed Deputy Captain in 2017.
He has been a valuable and highly respected member of the Brigade providing unwavering support to the Brigade and his community of ellington and beyond.
Always responding at the drop of the hat when his pager sounded, John has responded to all types of fires, Hazmat incidents, motor vehicle rescues and participated in community events to promote fire prevention and education.
For many years he has been a part of the ‘Wellington Boots’ championships team, competing in and on many occasions winning events at Regional and State Championships.
Being an On Call Firefighter requires significant commitment and as John’s time in the Brigade comes to an end, the support of his family and his business should not go unrecognised.
Running out on family dinners and events and often closing his own business to maintain a response capability of the Brigade and to help others in time of need, is testament to John Hunt’s character and good will.
The Brigade members of 493 Station Wellington wish him all the very best and good health in his retirement from Fire & Rescue NSW and thank him for his 37 years of service.
By Mark Moroney, Captain.
