WELLINGTON-BASED Indigenous tea company has brewed some winning blends to take out top honours at one of the country’s premier tea competitions - the Golden Leaf Awards.

Proudly supported by the NSW Government, Binjang Tea has cemented its reputation across the Central West and beyond for turning its blend of Australian native ingredients into unique recipes.

Wiradjuri woman Megan Humphries started the company at her Wellington home in the Binjang Valley.

Together with her business partner, Nadine Runciman, she has grown it into the successful brand it is today offering a range of unique tea blends, curated hampers and immersive native tea experience workshops.

A cup of Binjang Tea can also now be enjoyed by travellers in the Qantas Chairman’s and First Class lounges.

The pair were honoured to receive four medals including three gold and a silver.

“This is more than just recognition for Binjang Tea, it celebrates the unique and soul-stirring tastes of Australian native botanicals and showcases the global excellence of Indigenous innovation,” Ms Humphries said.

Acting Executive Director of the Regional Economic Development Network, Craig Jenkins congratulated the Binjang Tea team for its accomplishment.

“This achievement reflects the remarkable creativity, skill, cultural knowledge and hard work displayed by Megan and Nadine,” he said.

“Binjang Tea’s national recognition is a testament to the pride they take in sharing Aboriginal culture with communities across the Central West and the country.

“The State Government is committed to supporting initiatives that help Aboriginal businesses like Binjang Tea grow, innovate and reach new markets.

“Megan and Nadine’s achievements will also inspire other emerging enterprises across the region.”

Binjang Tea was awarded Gold in the Chai, Herbal Australiana and Green tea categories with its Binjang Bush Chai, Binjang Bush Green and Binjang Bush Lemon Myrtle and Ginger.

It also claimed Silver in the Herbal – Loose Blend (Unflavoured) category with its Binjang Bush Peppermint tea.

The Golden Leaf Awards is an independent competition judged by professional cuppers to distinguish the highest quality and best tasting teas commercially available in the Australasian marketplace.
