PAPA builds more units for elderly

Provision for Aged Person’s Accommodation (PAPA) president, Russell Nott with long-time committee member and association stalwart Delma Gersbach at the new six-unit complex being constructed between Arthur and Swift Streets.

IDEALY LOCATED within walking distance from the town’s main shopping area, residents who move into the six new single and double accommodation units between Arthur Street and Swift Street will not be severely inconvenienced.

These are the fifth complex of units built for the Provision of Aged Person’s Accommodation Association (PAPA) in as many decades.

The modern units are being constructed by Wellington builders Matt Redfern Constructions.

The cost of the project is $3.5 million raised entirely by PAPA.

The association’s president, Russell Nott said PAPA had borrowed $2.5 million to cover the project.

PAPA has also purchased the house between the 1984-built Arthur Street units and the Wellington Hotel, which makes sure the new and existing units would not be landlocked, even with an entrance from Swift Street near the railway station.

PAPA was established in the 1970s to make sure aged accommodation was available to older people who were agile and able to live comfortably alone or as couples at a time when accommodation was limited for aging locals. The association also has units in Maxwell Street and Thornton Street.

This new project has been in the making for some time, but soon to come to fruition for people on the PAPA waiting list.
