FIRST YEAR and second year university students looking for a helpful hand in financing their university year can now apply for a share of seven monetary grants totalling $25,000.
Wellington Lions Club is again facilitating the scholarship grants for 2026 offering five grants of $3000 and two at $5000 each.
This is the third year that Lions, assisted by Wellington Soldiers Memorial Club, are continuing their “Scholarships to Stop the Brain Drain” program encouraging our locals to return to regional area after graduation.
The program won the education category of the 2024 Clubs NSW Community Awards and already 21 locals have benefited from this scheme.
Applications opened on Monday, February 19 and will close on Friday, February 27, so applicants need to act quickly.
Forms are available online at both the Wellington Lions and Wellington Soldiers Memorial Club websites while hard copies are available from the Soldiers Club office during business hours.
Successful applicants will be announced on March 6.
The grants are open to all locals living in the Wellington 2820 postcode areas including Geurie, Mumbil, Stuart Town and Yeoval and studying at a university outside a 100-kilometre radius of Wellington.
Applications must include a copy of the student’s HSC certificate and a copy of the university’s acceptance letter, plus the local residential address.
Students must also write a short essay on what they are studying, and hope to gain from their studies, and their plans with their degree after graduation to work in a regional area.
Also an email address and contact number; their parents or guardians’ contact numbers.
Four Wellington judges – one from Lions, two from the Soldiers Club and an independent local businessperson – will select the seven successful students.
A grant will be made available through one payment to a real estate agent or the student’s
university.
